March 17 SCYPA Event – St Patrick’s Day!

Come celebrate St Patrick’s day with us at the Hudson Bar, downtown Barrie

When: Tuesday March 17th, 6pm – 9pm.
Where: Hudson (147 Dunlop St E)

SCYPA events are a great networking opportunity to socialize with other young professionals in the Simcoe area. Each and every event is fun… but something tells me this could be one of the more entertaining events of the year!

A little about Hudson…
At the heart of downtown Barrie, Hudson redefines dining and entertainment. Culinary ingenuity. Cocktails & dreams. World of wine. Hudson.

At the turn of the century the temperance movement, driven mostly by those of the evangelical Protestant religion, were successful in convincing US congress to enact the Volstead Act. This act, for all intents and purposes, prohibited “the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes”. With prohibition, sharing a drink with your friends went underground.. and the Speakeasy, was born. A place where people of like mind could come together and share good drinks, good times and create great memories.

SCYPA Joins Launch of Young Professionals Network of Ontario (YPNO) in Toronto

Tim L. Walker and Sarah Hahn joined dozens of under-forties from all corners of the province on November 26th to announce the launch of Young Professionals Network of Ontario (YPNO) at Queen’s Park in Toronto. Barrie’s MPP Ann Hoggarth attended in support of the project. YPNO is a central hub to support young people to do business, network, advocate, have a voice at provincial and national tables, and build economic development opportunities.

There has been a significant lack of opportunities for young professionals across the province to meet like-minded peers and have a voice on provincial issues. YPNO is a volunteer-based organization that will serve as an essential provincial network to connect, engage, inspire and advocate for professionals under 40 years. SCYPA is excited to join YPNO and represent Simcoe County’s young professionals at a provincial and national level.

YPNO represents over 30 Young Professionals Networks with thousands of members dispersed across Ontario, including small northern communities like Kenora. Members also come from all sectors and walks of life including private business, public entities, trades, not-for profit agencies, and Aboriginal organizations.

An advocacy campaign called; Meet Us, Hear Us was also announced to Parliament at Queen’s Park.

Incoming SCYPA chair and YPNO board member, Sarah Hahn says, “Our advocacy goal is to inform politicians and decision-makers about the issues concerning young people today. The current provincial deficit, lack of incentives to attract and retain young people, infrastructure planning and jobs are just a few of the top concerns. There are also important local issues such as encouraging young entrepreneurs to stay local that we look forward to starting conversations with political or socio-economic influencers about.  SCYPA’s involvement in YPNO is a unique opportunity to engage future leaders on key issues.”
